We are planning to drive from Philadelphia to maine in april next year. Having looked at the maps, the 95 seems to be the direct route, but it looks awfully complicated especially when crossing new york. I think we would prefer to take a different route but want to stop off in Boston. Has anyone out there actually done this drive, and is the route through New York as complicated as it looks. I don't especially want to get lost in the Bronx.

you shouldn't get lost anywhere - I did this years ago and though I don't remember the details, you just stay on the interstate, 95 as you said. You can't get lost on a motorway (US ones are pretty well signposted as long as you are clear which number route you want and which direction). Just keep following the signs for 95 north. You'd have to take an exit to get into the Bronx.
