I have a friend who would like to purchase some wine to open when her grand-children (in their late 20s and 30s) call at Xmas. Can anyone please suggest any nice, reasonably priced wines (not too sweet or too acid) to drink (not with a meal).

nice to some might not be nice to others. I like black tower or blossom hill. and I prefer rose wine
I always go for a merlot if drinking red...fruity, warm and not to harsh. Not too sure on whites. Blossom Hill is nice as is Stowells.
agree with Angiebaby for red and for white I enjoy a pinot grigio or a chablis - I find 'chardonnay' bit too heavy to enjoy on its own. I am no expert and normally pick up pinot grigio for around 4. M & S do a nice pinot grigio frizzante (very slight fizz) or pinot grigio blush (palest rose just a hint of pink) they are both very enjoyable and are around 5.
