Alt key on Dell Laptop

Anyone know about Dell laptops please? I have recently purchased a Dell Studio 17 laptop and very pleased with it. However there is one strange anomoly. When wishing to highlight random files for deleting or moving, the right hand CTRL key works perfectly but the left hand one will only select one file at a time. Is this normal and can the key be re-programmed? It is awkward being right handed to select files and highlight them because you have to cross hands to achieve the desired result.
