Where can I get information about training to be an Optical assistant? What I would really like to know is if there is a college that offers a short course. I have checked the internet and most training is in house.

i suggest you go into your local opticians and ask them for all the relevent information..or better still write to their head office...i do think it will be all in house and work your way up from there...
