In the books that Eric Thompson wrote in the 1970's, he is described as a Scots Terrier.

There must have been a change in breed between the books & the cartoons - Scotties are Black and don't look much like the Dougal that most people know from the cartoon

Maybe I need to read the books again.

In Dougal's Scotish Holiday, he goes to visit his Uncle in Scotland, and he is a Scots Terrier ( and yes, the Uncle is black ).

thank you, he looks like my dogs which are wheaten terriers.  i think the dog in the film 'Wimbledon' is a wheaton.
