never heard of not being able to freeze food with onion in it, I certainly do freeze all sorts of dishes:- mince, steak and kidney, spag. bol.,stuffing
Onions on their own don't freeze well because there is too much water in the plant - like strawberries.

thanks grannydi...i might give it a try. I don't like to throw leftovers away (such a waste) and if there's a tiny bit of dinner left I freeze it and have it for my lunch another day. But have always been wary of freezing food with onions cos i heard you shouldn't.
they don't freeze well if you try freezing a whole onion.

Chop them up fairly finely open freeze them on a tray to stop them freezing into one lump and then tip into a freezer bag when frozen and they will be fine, also you'll be able to remove a little at a time for use rather then thawing the whole lot out.
i use a lot of onions in cooking and have always frozen the leftovers. right now in the freezer i have some spag bol, and some cottage pie. i've also seen frozen chopped onions in the freezers at the supermarket.
i've never heard of not being able to freeze onions, i wonder where that originated.
I always get the frozen chopped onions (from Sainsburys) as it is more practical when cooking just for myself.
I too have never heard anything about not freezing food with onion in it.
Me neither - I freeze leftovers as well and like chuck says, you can freeze onion too, on its own.
Tesco even sell bags of onions already chopped in their frozen food section!!!
You can buy bags of frozen sliced onions, and mushrooms normally dont freeze well due to water content, but you can freeze stuff with mushrooms in it?maybe the frozen food manufacturers put something in the process to help them to freeze!!!
onion rings are normally in the freezer department so im sure they must be ok.
I also freeze meals with onion and garlic in them, even grow garlic and chop it up and freeze it.

Think its ok
I've always frozen foods with onion in it. Here in the US, we can buy chopped onion in the freezer section of our grocery store!
