when did o2 take over carling??

i was just about some tickets when i saw the venue. at first didn't recognize it and now just wanting to be sure.
has the carling academy in glasgow (and myabe the rest of the uk) been taken over by o2 now becoming the o2 academy or is the o2 academy a completely new venue???

not sure how or why the change has come about but apparantly carling academy glasgow becomes O2 academy on 1st January. Not sure if the same with every venue.

i hate all that changing names of places and calling it after the a a company . they changed the name of the point in dublin the o2 a few weeks ago
