Making Drive E the Default Drive

As my PC is getting old and I might invest in a new one soon I decided that, because the CD Rom Drive in the tower does not work properly (am told I need a new one installed) I have connected an External Pioneer CD/DVD drive to my PC via USB and it works fantastic! Reading and playing my data discs which would not previously work.

One problem. The New Drive shows as 'E' and whenever I try to use it, say via Roxio, it brings up Drive D in my tower as the Default Drive and each time I have to scroll down and click on the new Drive. Then all is ok.

However, when I next try and do anything it has defaulted back to D again! There is no option I can see to make Drive E the Default Drive permanently.

I looked in System - Hardware - Device Manager and both devices show.

I right clicked on the old drive (D) and there was an option to disable this, but I was afraid to do this in case it messed up my PC altogether!

What should I do? If I disable Drive D will Drive E then become drive D or will it always show as 'E'?

Can anyone please help me. I bet it is simple and I am missing the obvious.

Thanks all you experts.

I would just pull the cable out the back of the internal drive if it doesn't work.

Then the external drive will become D and everything will use it as it will be the only drive.
You can also change the letter assigned to drives:

CLick Start, then right click on your computer name and select Manage.

In the management screen, go to Disk Management.

You should see your CD Rom (D).....right click and select "Change drive letters and paths"

Now you can change the drive letter to whatever you want

Thanks to you both for coming back so quickly. I have done it! Couldn't pull out wire from back as I am not competent to open up my PC!
So I did what you said and changed my new external CDRom to 'D'.
I then had the CD Rom on the tower showing as 'E' so i went into Device manager, Right clicked it and disabled it.
So I now only show the corect one.
Trust that this was ok to do.
Thanks again
No problem.

Hope it works well for you
