I have a small electric fan heater for 3 yrs but now in the cold months it has started to trip out and then restart a few minutes later- now i know they trip out when room gets hot- but it barely warms the room.I cleared dust from the heater but it still trips out - it has never done this in previous winters or cold days or any time of the year.

Probably full of fluff etc. from the air drawn in over that time.Use the blow side of a vac cleaner to clear the build up.
chances are the motor is partly seized (look carefully to see if there are hairs trapped round its spindle), this will make it slow down and not pass enough air over the elements. These heat up more than they ought to, so it trips off. Also clean the blades of the fan of all crud, this too affects the airflow..

if all that fails, toss it and get another. avoid the cheapo (sub 20 quid) ones ,which are flimsy chinese junk and don't last.
