I have been given a Fluval 4+ filter for my aquarium (which is quite small at approximately 40ltrs capacity), would this filter be too large / powerful at approx 1000ltrs per hour? Any advice much appreciated. TIA Ian Red

I would say so. Is it cold or tropical. In a tank that size you could not house too many fish anyway and a fruval 4 would take up a lot of fish space. Fluval 1 or 2 would be ok.

Thanks cris r...Its a cold water set up, with 4 fan tails, 3 weather loaches & 10 assorted danios.....I was more worried about the power level & rate of filtration, and wether the small fish would get sucked up lol!
I agree with Chris, the Fluval filters are quite long and will not fit unless the aquarium is high enough. I would go with one of the smaller models such as the 1 or 2+. Eheim Aquaball filters are also very good.

Thanx All, I will try to swap with my friend who has a bigger tank and a smaller filter ;-)
