Does the same thing happen when you choose the option of 'Stand By' or 'Hibernate' ? You could try using the 'Task Manager' to check to see if there are any programs still trying to run in the background (a hidden program might cause this probelm).
Have you Defragged the hard drives lately, and, if necessary, run Scan Disk.

Er yes and yes. i defrag regularly say once a month and the same thing happens for stand by ( i don't have hibernate enabled) i have to use restart (which seems still to work) then hold in the power switch to turn off at the moment. as to hidden programs i'll check but i din't think so somehow. cheers but some more sugggestions would be good.
If you are using some of the file sharing progs eg; kazaalite or bearshare they can sometimes be running in the background and mess up your attempts to shut down. I think some of them actually start automatically when you connect to the intenet unannounced. I had a bad experience with bearshare which led to a couple of hours of formatting and reinstalling.Yuk !
