For those of us who never buy the Guardian, perhaps you could tell us how may letters, and which of these you already have.
e.g. if it is (3,6), it could be Rio Grande

Simple - it's an anagram of "gain order" and the Rio Grande forms part of the border between the USA and Mexico.
