week, yet everyone livens up at weekends? Admittedly, there may be work the next day, but conversations seem to go up a gear come Friday nights. Is it because people've had a drink then?

Maybe its the same as why pubs and clubs are quiet in the week, but busy at weekends,

Just a thought Ice.

Ah - but people often get paid at the end of a week or month, so can afford to go out more then - or don't have to get up for work.

Hey - but thanks for your slant on things trt! Think everyone's gone off to bed!
...Whispers...

I'm still up Icey, but it's scary over here! All those terrible ogres lurking in the CB undergrowth, waiting to pounce on the unwary traveller...

Stops whispering

...I'll risk it - how are you, hon? Still curled up in front of the fire, all snug & cosy?

Sighs wistfully...

Hi LinK - so you've dared to come over to this side again have you! Awww.... I don't think anyone was being really "funny" with us last time, but i honestly thought Elvis'd left the thread. Anyway, this is mine - so fire away - no pun intended.
No - no rip-roarer tonight, but the ch was put on earlier when it started to get chilly. At this rate, the bills are going to be astronomical, but having open fires as well is really nice.
...Can anyone actually afford to drink out these days? I know I can't - if I can afford a drinkie, it comes home with me from the supermarket!

Haven't got a pub here anyway - I can get a bus to town early evening, then have to add 8 or 9 for cab fare to the cost of an evening 'cos the buses stop running!
Question Author
Oh no!!!! Lol. Do you live out in the wilds then?
Sorry, we crossed! Do I gather correctly that you live in a large house? I'm all by my lonesome in a 2-bed flat, & only have the storage heater in the living-room on.

That might have to stop, as I've just been asked to up my leccy payments by 141%! No, you read it right... :-(
The "Village (hah!) (of the Damned)" has a station that the trains only stop at mornings & evenings, a cafe, many elderly people - and me!

There is a place that calls itself a pub, but it's really a restaurant with a very small bar attached to it, and that's 15/20 minutes walk, on a main road with no lighting...
Question Author
Where to start? Well at least you have a place to live hun. Some people on their own only manage to get a bedsit for one, so it's something to be thankful for. The electric bill...oh no - it seems an awful increase, although I know it's gone up 2 or 3 times quite recently. The "village of the damned" made me smile. Here's a solution - get a job at the "pub", and then at least you'd meet some (possibly0 younger folk dropping in!!! No - forget it - take a cab into town, if only once a month!!
: )
Believe me, I'm truly grateful to have a roof over my head! The circumstances that led to me being here were extremely difficult & painful, so I hope you won't be offended if I don't post any details on a public forum?

I managed a pub near Baker Street in London many years ago & that rather spoilt me for bar-work anywhere else! It's really not very nice down there, anyway...

...And you're absolutely right, of course - I should get out more! :-)
Question Author
Oh - hello again! I thought you'd skipped the fold! : )

No - of course I wouldn't expect you to post personal details on here that you'd rather keep to yourself. , and I didn't mean to sound nasty when I said you should be grateful for the roof over your head. The material trappings are of no real consequence anyway, whether you live in a bedsit or a palace, but we all deserve a roof over our heads don't we? Sadly, this isn't always possible for some. Hey - and as for getting out more, I meant blow the cost of taxis now and again, depending on what time the train arrives at your station in the evenings? It's good to get out when you can - but cheaper to stay in, so there's the dilemma! moving on - can i ask you how come you're so good at answering cryptic crossword clues and so forth?!! yiour knowledge astounds me sometimes.
Question Author
Oops - excuse typos. Rubbish keyboard - honestly!
Apologies for the delay, I'm afraid I'm getting ready to head for the Land of Nod...

You're very kind, but in answer - I don't really know!

English was always my best subject - when I was 7, my reading age was 21. I had a dog-eared library card & was allowed to read any of the hundreds of books on the shelves at home. Also, my mum was an avid cruciverbalist & Scrabble fan, and she taught me what she knew about cryptic clues - I just seemed to take to them easily!

I truly love the English language - there's just so much fun to be had with it! :-))
Question Author
Incredible! I also love words and have a fair command of the English language - mainly because, like yourself, English was my favourite subject at school. To have a reading level of 21 when you're a child of 7 (was that a misprint??) is remarkable. I could read and write before I went to school - thanks to my mother, and wrote a story which filled an entire fullscap exercise book when I was 7 - coincidentally! I was fortunate enough to be blessed with an imagination that allowed me to express it on paper, but when it came to maths...I think I fell into the "dunce" category!!! Anyway, nice talking to you again. I must let you get off to bed now. Night. x
No misprint, honestly! My parents were told that the test wasn't difficult enough & that my "mark" had been estimated.

The teachers - primary & secondary - always asked me to read in class & I loved doing it. That got me into performing in the school plays each year, which fed my passion for Shakespeare...sorry, I'm rambling now!

Anyhoo...when it comes to astonishment, what about you? How do you manage to zip from thread to thread & from section to section so quickly?

How have you acquired such a broad range of knowledge & wisdom when still so young? :-))

As always, it's been a delight to chat with you & with your permission, I'll bid you a fond farewell & wish you a peaceful night. :-)) x

Thank you LinK. What's your name anyway? You don't have to give your real one, only I abbreviate Lie-in-King as it is!! Lol.
I don't consider myself to have extreme knowledge in any one area, but I had a brilliant education, was taught to ask questions and to listen and to offer opiniions. Both my parents are pretty damn bright, and actually, I think I'm the "dense" one in the family really, as my brother and sisters are all academically adept, shall we say. Had to smile about being young - I'm 30 very soon!!! Anyway, yes, it's been nice chatting to you as usual. Have a good night. x
Maybe people just have more time at the weekend to chill out and come on here ?
