JOEY can you give more info, is this a British case?
It would seem not. I understand the idea is that he is being his sentence is deemed served, on the condition that he returns to the UK. He'll go on the Sex Offenders Register, but I don't suppose he'll be locked up unless he re-offends, more's the pity. :O(

Firstly, he's not Australian, he's a British citizen. If you want to know whether the UK authorities will be able to lock him up if he comes here, the short answer is no. Being a paedophile is not of itself illegal, acting on those impulses is.

Since the man in question has not committed any offences in the UK, and has served his sentence in Australia, there's very little that they can do. Having said that, he will be required to register on the Sex Offender's Register and to regularly report to a police station.

There are a series of recommendations currently in a consultation period, which you can read about here:

However, if he was a suspected terrorist.....

Well, in a way being a paedophile will keep you locked up. If he had run his sentence in the UK, he would probably still be in jail under UK law, since he is 'low to moderate risk', ie could reoffend, so will be kept in jail to protect children.

Put it this way. Would you let your kids out to play in the garden if there was a paedophile living free next door who had been classified as 'low to medium risk'?

'Oh, he's low to medium risk, that's ok then'. Chances must be pretty low then. The guy was let out on parole 3 times and reoffended each time!! Beginning to see a pattern? Not much in the news about the kids....

I mostly agree Waldo, but will he even have to sign the register, given that he is not, in the UK anyway, a sex offender.

As much as in this case I think most would want him locked up, we still live in a society where, generally you are not locked up for what you might do.

Question Author
Well, most people that are locked up are locked up for what they might do, as well as what they actually did. It's part of the point in locking up. And you don't really need to do anything. If you're mentally ill (and I think that many paedophiles are) then you should be locked up if you present a significant danger to the public. At present, I think your illness needs to be 'treatable'. Mr schizophrenic park walker a couple of weeks ago was released on the 'untreatable' basis, walked out, and killed someone.

Maybe we're heading towards 'Minority Report'!

"will he even have to sign the register, given that he is not, in the UK anyway, a sex offender."

So it says on the BBC website.

Austrailia sending criminals to Britain !!!!!!!!!!!!!
It might not happen. Have caught up with the news here and a former prisoner who shared a cell with him has gone to the police with accusations that he was sexually assaulted and want's him charged.
What a shame that Australia does not have the death penalty for such offences.  What I find utterly galling is the amount fo what appear to be afluent, well spoken friends he has who have been interviewed by the Australian media.  They all seem to be adamant that he poses no further threat!!

How would killing convicted paedophiles solve the problem?
I have to confess Im in wtf mode - a serial paedophile who has broken parole 3 times then told he would never be let out of prison (justly so imo) and yet he is being let out still defined as a risk. Absurd. Maybe the home secretary can use his new found power to place him under house arrest without trial. Or is that people who haven't actually done anything yet . . .?
If he brought over to the UK all that can happen is he will be put on the sex offenders register. But no bail conditions will apply to him so i reckon he does not have to report regularly to a police station.

Yeah, El D, I saw one of the Aussie top brass being interviewed about it "He's only classified as low to medium threat. Which is why we're releasing him." [sudden moment of truth where he realizes 'medium risk' paedophile on street might be bad thing]. "But I don't think any risk is an acceptable risk. Which is why he's being extradited."

Soo....you lock convicted paedophiles up to protect not any child, but only children in your own country. Niiice....
