How can I download music from a tape deck onto my hard drive and where will it be stored? (I have an audio cable which plays from the tape onto my laptop). My aim is to capture this for background in camcorder film which I am editing.

You will need aduio recording software such as the free and excellent Audacity

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Set the input to ext line and play the tape you should see the waveform appear on the timline. Then export as either wav or mp3 (you may need extra codecs to make mp3s)

You may well be able to capture the audio straight into your editing software as it is. What are you using?

Thank you Pug, I will give that a shot. I am using Image Mixer which came with my Sony Camcorder, however, I am also editing digital photos into sequence using Photo Story which has audio but can only access via music stored on the hard drive.

Trying to get the Free Audacity but cannot find a way past the "once only" registration charge of 40.95.

Thanks Chuck,
Been there, Done that, still got the 40.95 3year help charge. Looks non negotiable to me unless I am missing something very obvious.
Try using this link http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windo ws
Downloaded ok - no charge.
