go to www.netnames.com and type in whichever domain name you fancy or are interested in, it will tell you whether they are registered and if so who to.

A certain amount of "warehousing" still occurs where domain names are registered en mass in the hope that one will be despirately required by another company. The warehouser can then sell on the domain for a hugely inflated price. The increasing number of top level's to the domain system should make things easier. try a .info domain if you can't get the .com
