That's a $64 question (pardon the pun).  Smaller towns with lower end products like Fairfield Inns (a Marriott product), Comfort Inns, Holiday Express, type places will average, in the summer months about $80 to $90.  This would be for 2 persons.  Most have breakfast provided.  The middle and upper end products as well as Bed and Breakfast's will run closer to $110 to near $200.  From another thread, I see that you are planning travel through Yosemite.  I hope you already have reservations in that area, since they are booked, during the summer months at least, many months in advance. Good Luck! I sincerely hope you enjoy the visit...
With luck you might get even cheaper than that with chains like Super 8, Motel 6 or Econolodge; check out www.super8.com, www.motel6.com, www.econolodge.com to see if they're where you want them. I expect there are others, as well as non-chain ones; a while since I've been in the States. Of course they're nothing fancy, and 'breakfast' may just be a danish  pastry and coffee - you get what you pay for, but if all you want is a roof over your head they may be fine. If you want a luxury honeymoon motel, there are plenty of more expensive ones too.

thanks for your answers. Yes, Clanad, i've booked the evergreen lodge just outside yosemite. Just looking for somewhere in San fran now! Can't decided whether to stay downtown (to be near everything) or the nob hill / wharf area - any ideas?

I like Fishermans Wharf area... be sure to visit Chinatown and Napa Valley if you have time.  Visit the wine making areas...

Check this link for descriptions of lodging in the wharf area.... Enjoy

(The original URL wouldn't copy correctly, so use this one and scroll to the bottom to select Fisherman's Wharf.)
