I saw crocus' out today, in a neighbour's front garden.

Surely this is the wrong time of year? There was a good mix of colours and they looked like ordinary crocus.

Is this possible in the Midlands, or is it a different plant?

There are many varieties of true crocus that flower in the autumn. See Wikipedia for some that are listed.
