Hi, would anyone with experience be kind enough to share their knowledge and advice please? I think I have it and can not get a Dr's appointment until next week.

i've suffered with depression for a long time,& taken prescribed anti-depressants,which do help keep the symptoms under control,but do not get rid of it,as the cause is still there,not sure what the real cause is,my doc not overly helpful to be honest.it's easy for others who do not suffer to pass 'judgement'.do you know what may be causing your prob?hope your doc is helpful!

Thank you Petal, no i have no idea, did feel like this 3 and 6 years ago though. This is the first time I am admitting it to myself and talking to people about it. That's not very good about your Dr, can you see a different one?

I have also suffered with depression for a long time and have been on medication for about 5 years. This does help but obviously doesn't take away the whole problem. Are you having problems sleeping, have mood swings, feel weepy and low self esteem? I found these the main symptoms and am lucky enough to have a very good GP who has been very understanding.

Try the MIND website mind.org.uk. They have some very good advice and give you details of local contacts who may be able to help you until you are able to see your GP.

ive suffered with depression since i was 15 am 25 now.i always desribe it as being at the bottom of a big hole with no way of getting and it all being black.i have tried numerous different pills but i am happy with the ones i am on now.i know its easier said than done but exercise can help clear ur mind a bit.i dont mean the gym but sumtimes a long walk can help organise ur thoughts as when i am depressed i just feel swamped by my emotions.docs opinions vary so i hope u can find a good 1.remember any1 who says pull urself 2gether or snap out of it are idiots 2 put it nicely

I know it may sound silly but try excersize, I remember being down at a stage in my life and went swimming a few times, and you get out feeling a different person...excersize releases a certain chemical (a feel good one) but I cant remember what is is called...hope you feel better soon x
The anti depressants I was prescribed made me feel like a zombie. When you are depressed you don't want to do anything but exercise DOES help - try walking or jogging. I bounce on my rebounder (little trampoline). Looking after an animal helps apparently. Yoga or meditation might help or counselling. Music, drawing or writing. Give yourself little treats like a massage. You just have to find what works for you. I take Vegepa which is Omega 3 + 6 - meant to be good for concentration and stabilising mood (order on the internet). Try to think positive and challenge any negative thoughts. Depression is awful but you can fight it! Good Luck!
i think being able to talk about things helps ,bottling things up often makes things seem worse,we're not alone
i suffer from depression for 15 yrs, ive had been referred to a counciler, but it never worked for me. so i stop going after two sessions.
ever since i just kept everything inside me. its hard work because if youre infront of people u dont want to tell them that youre sad.
what i normally do, just cry everyday and night. when im on my own just to get the system out. But sometimes when it gets too much u just burst out........ :'(

Hey you, I too was depressed to a VERY low point in my life. Doctors tried to zombify me but I knew that wasn't the answer. I agree with all others' it was exercise and feeling better in myself hat helped me the most, along with family backing. It's sort of like finding your self worth and believing in yourself. Please don't take that as shrink words but from someone who understands. Good Luck.

counselling can help the main thing is you have to want to feel better and be prepared to be honest with your counsellor. /The thing about counselling is it can take a few sessions to build up any trust or relationship with your counsellor.They can only work with whatever you can talk to them about so no matter how hard it is you need to talk honestly and openly. It can reopen old wounds in the beginning but by working through the pain as opposed to bottling it up you will get through it

Depression can take different forms, and exist to different degrees -

reactive depression - as the name suggests can be the result of a trauma and will respond to professional therapry, possibly in conjunction with medication

medical depression - can be brought on by low levels of a chemical called seratonin which the brain manuafctures - again it can be balanced with medication.

You need to talk to your GP and get advice and treatment, so hang on until then - there are loads of people on here who will comfort and support you from personal experience.

I was hospitalised nineteen years ago with a complete breakdown, I was in for three months, and had almost a year off work. It took a long time to get balanced with medication, but that only controls the symptoms, I still have to work hard for my good days, and live through my bad ones.

Take comfort from us - you will get past this, it will take time, but you will be a stronger and more self-sufficient person at the end of it.

hi i have PTSD and depression. make sure your friends know and have all their phone numbers to hand to talk to. sometimes i just phone my sister and cry. also in middle of night when things are often at their darkest - remember samaritans are there for you. one day at a time is good, but sometimes getting through the hour is hard. i echo andyhughes - you are not on your own. big hug

some great infos here, i am the type who doesnt share my problems the people.

Ive been really depressed lately today at work ive been really quiet, you know when ppl say 'Just be yourself?' well i was.. just being quiet and doing my work. what annoys me the most is they keep asking me if i was ok. because i was being too quiet.

if i said i was ok, why cant they just leave me alone. the more they ask me the more likely i will just break down in tears, and then the boss would take me to a room and force me to talk about it! NO i dont want to do that!
