I am currently writing my degree dissertation on the effect of marketing on the growth of the mobile phone industry. I would be grateful if there is anyone with direct work experience in this area who would be able to help, possibly interviewed.

lol. Yeah, I know the guy who kicked off the 'cheap phones, expensive calltime' revolution.

The offer of cheap handsets coupled with "expensive" calltime was the main catalyst for the growth of the industry. The revenue from calls provides profit for companies such as Vodafone, which is largely reinvested in services for customers. Mobile phone networks are enormously expensive, and have to be paid for. Mobile phone companies are businesses at the end of the day, and oddly enough they exist to make money. It never ceases to amaze that some people in this country still can't grasp such a basic concept.

I see your point, but I'm sure my last mobile phone bill contributed the lion's share of our new local transmission mast...

In that case, the only advice I can offer is to use your phone less, or switch to pay as you go.
