What is Piccalilli? When you get pickled veggies they call them pickled onions etc, but with its piccalilli, they just call it piccalilli not pickled piccalilli

In those terms you'd say it's pickled Mixed veg with condiments etc. Piccalilli is the brand name, unlike pickle which is a general term.

I'm sure you can get it on its own, not as a mixed veg. I'm sure its not a brand name as Branstons do piccalli, in the same way they do mixed pickled veg and pickled onions etc.

Yes it's Branston's Picallili. There is no vegetable called a "picallili" so it would be Pickled Picallili.

Like McVities Ginger nuts, there are a lot of different makes of Ginger biscuits but the originals are McVities. (ok it might not be Mc Vities but you get the point)

By the same token, Picallili is just one of many products (brands) made by Branston. 

I am sure many other firms make the same thing and probably can call it Picallili because of the 50 year rule so there are many versions of it but, it is essentially pickled mixed veg with various condements, mainly mustard and vinager but lots of other things it is not the same as the other "pickled mixed veg in vinegar", another offering without a particular short name.

Thanks Loosehead, I thought you mean brand ie Branstons. Its all clear now though! Feel a bit daft now!
That's ok, I should have been more precise.
The dictionary says the word piccalilli was first used in 1769 and that it is possibly derived from a combination of the words pickle and chilli, so being defined as a pickle composed of chopped vegetables and hot spices.
Piccalilliis different from pickled veg - the sauce is a thick, bright yellow concoction made from vinegar, mustard and coloured with turmeric and is absolutely wonderful! It is sometimes called Mustard pickle.

Piccalilli is NOT a brand name - there are many makes, with Haywards being the best in my opinion. The Co-op used to sell bottles of the sauce without the vegetables, and you can get sweet and spicy varieties
