Speakers for a laptop

Hello,

I'm looking to buy some speakers for my laptop, ideally 2.1 speakers that have a woofer.

It's quite a basic laptop and I'm looking at the ports and wondering where speakers like this connect to. Do they plug into the headphone socket? Or are they USB? Or what?

And does the absence of a proper speaker port mean that I can't get 2.1 speakers? Am I stuck with just basic twin speakers?

I recently upgraded my speakers for my Laptop as the sound wasnt great with virtually no bass. I opted for the JBL Encounters which i would recommend to anyone and are made up of two satellite speakers and a lovely Sub Woofer that can really chuck it out if you so desire! This is connected via my headphone port on my Laptop which im sure every Laptop has? Another good thing is that i can also plug my Ipod into these speakers too using the headphone connection as another option if i want to listen to music from there.
sorry but LOL

OK, you haven't quite got the concept of what 2.1 speakers are.

2.1 speakers are essentially the same as "basic twin speakers"

You have 2 speakers (the 2.1) that provide the highs and the mids for the left and right channels and then you have 1 subwoofer (the 2.1) which provides the bass for both left and right combined.

The theory being that your ears can't tell what direction bass is coming from so you don't need to provide left and right bass.

So 2.1 speakers are only standard 2 channel stereo speakers and just plug into your normal headphone/speaker output on your computer.

the speakers that need special outputs are 5.1 and 7.1 which have extra rear and middle channels/speakers to provide full surround sound.
