Only since 1997 in the form currently in general circulation, though two pound coins of various kinds have been issued for some 500 years. If by early ones, you mean those from the late 1990s, they are almost certainly not worth more than their face value. Apparently, there is an urban myth that 2 coins with the Queen wearing a pearl necklace are worth 15, but it is not true. For lots more info click http://www.24carat.co.uk/twopoundsstory.html

I've got a two pound coin next to me that has 1986 printed on it. So they must have been in circulation earlier than 1997.
You're right baiton20, I was over in England in 1986 and my Mother mentioned that a new two pound coin had been issued. I went to the Post Office and bought one - I still have it.
