Blimey, I did not realise that since I went to bed last night, England had suddenly changed from being a country into being a region.

England - like Holland - is a region (albeit one with a strong sense of identity, also like Holland) and has been for centuries. If you ignore the rest of the UK, then you ignore quite a substantial amount of land so naturally population density will appear bigger. Particularly when you compare it to other whole countries.
