as in films such as creep and extreme measures, are there really people who live below ground, in sewers or subway systems? i really beleive there could be but noone else agrees.

someone told me about crocs in the new york subway, following a fashion to have pet crocs and alligators that were flushed down the loo when they grew too big. but what about underground molemen people???

Certainly some children have to. From

Street
Children in Romania
Romania has an estimated 6,000 plus homeless children living on the streets, most having run away from institutions or family abuse. As Romania's notorious institutions are being closed down, the numbers are on the increase.
We fund a safe house for homeless children in a city in NE Romania. In the winter months, many children retreat to the sewers where at least it is warm.

Also
In 1991, British television audiences were appalled by scenes of children living in sewers in the Colombian capital, Bogot.

They come up to get food etc, though.

There have been a couple of documentaries about New York's subterranean community. Pretty sure the alligator thing is an urban legend, though.
