what im trying to say do i need any other bits apart from the wireless router
The short answer to that is "Yes". Check the manual for your router, but, as far as I am aware, all routers can take more than one wireless connection.
You shouldn't need any extra bits. Any new laptop should be wireless-enabled by default.
No, you won't need anything else if your laptop is wifi enabled.

You can buy a wireless card for your desktop too but I guess that is harder to move about.

Handy if you want it in a different room to your modem and router though.

So yes, you can ditch the desktop and replace with a wireless laptop.
