I am at the end of my tether trying to uninstall this program which has completely took over my sons computer. Tried several uninstalls taken from the net but none of them have worked. Driving me nuts. Anyone who has any suggestions please feel free to guide me in the right direction. I am using windows XP.

Thanks for the reply. Tried that but after entering the 2 commands tried right clicking on the taskbar for the task manager but it is greyed out ?

Just getting load of pop ups which also stops me from using google also. Keeps taking me back to the XP anti virus home page asking me to get the full version.

Obviously not going to. With this being new its only a matter of time before someone finds some kind of patch I'm sure.

HERE'S HOPING

terambulan.... When I tried add remove programmes it says it cannot be uninstalled as the program is in use. It appears on the taskbar but won't allow me to stop the program running. Obviously the virus is designed to work this way to make it more difficult.
Try Ctrl/Alt/delet to stop it and then back to Control panel as before
ctrl+alt+del should work

also try starting in safe mode ... it might make life easier.

what virus/spyware prog(s) do you use at the mo!
.... whatever the answer - it sounds like it's time to change
Hi tommo i had this virus and it totally peed me off to the point that i was going to open my window and launch the pc,everytime i wanted to use the pc it locked up with so many popups saying my pc is infected even down by my clock it said virus alert then i had an attack off malware2008.

What i had to do was to download this prog SmitfraudFix from this location http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php and follow the instuctions on the page then i used a cleanup program called Spyhunter3 to get rid of the rest........Try it it got rid off mine..................................Good Luck

Exactly same symptoms as you. Have tried downloading the file by saving onto a memory stick on my comp. However it won't run on my sons infected comp ( will on mine ). I think it is because XP antivirus is running in the background. Task manager is greyed out so can't stop and when i use ctrl - alt - del it says that the system administrator has disabled task manager. I have tried running file by right clicking and selecting as run as - administrator and putting in password but still no joy.

This is really winding me up now.
I tested this on a VM, and this cleared it up no trouble.

p.s SMF does not remove this particular problem, and SAS left most of it.

I have tried that one. The trouble is when I try to open the file to run it, it won't open on infected computer. Must be XP antivirus running in background. Need to find a way to stop it running. In normal mode when I try to run msconfig to stop it starting it says that it does not exist.
When you used it did you use the file in normal or safe mode ?

Also I have totally uninstalled my free AVG anti virus 7.5 and tried installing with newer version 8 but it won't let me install the file, so now I have NO anti virus.

Just tried opening file again but it just simply refuses to open on infected computer but opens fine on my own comp. Have tried several removal tools but all refuse to open on infected comp. Very frustrating. On the verge of giving up !

Thanks to all who have replied so far.
I had this also so I can fully understand your feelings. My nephew in Australia walked me through removing it (after a large number of aborted attempts) on Skype. Press Con+Alt+ Del to get Task Manager. Click on Processes and Antivirus 2008 will be on list. Try End Process to delete ( now as it's a few months since I did it , I'm now a bit hazy about actual procedure), so let me know if this doesn't work and I'll contact him - It's 2am over there now but I can get in touch tomorrow. Good luck.
I'm sure i downloaded it on the infected pc (i think i used windows live search to search for it because it disables google and yahoo) saved it to the desktop then booted into safe mode, although i would have thought you could have transfered it to your sons pc i know it hides a lot of your start menu options and your c drive...
Try booting into safe mode to see if you could use antispyware software to remove it.......

I am unable to get to task manager as it is greyed out. When I try to do ctrl - alt - delete it says that the system administrator has disabled it.
I was so aggravated by it at the time that I can't now remember some of the stuff it had managed to disable. Anyways, the removal worked like a dream, so I'll get in touch when he wakes up and get back to you.
Try it in Safe Mode.

By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again, as you have to be quick when you press it.

I have found that during boot up, right after the computer displays the equipment , memory, etc
installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key, the system will usually display the menu.
Hi, was in touch with you yesterday. Have you solved your problem?. If not, let me know.

Thanks to all who replied. I reluctantly decided to do a system restore to factory settings as all else seemed to fail. Resulted in some lost music files etc but I now feel a lot less stressed.

Once again thanks to all.
