6th Paragraph (NB Anton has a foreign accent):

A player had hit a six and the ball had landed in a bush near the couple. There was a flutter of wings, Anton investigated and came back looking sad. "There on de ground - - - - - - - - (8)" he said. Then a tabby cat appeared.

Penultimate paragraph:

Kate pretended to read but she could hear Anton's voice drone on as he gazed at Maggie with love - - - - - - (6).

thanks for that, I've got quite a few iffy answers but let me know if I can help.

Also, I've put earthworm for an answer in the 10th paragraph but didn't think that was an insect - has anyone any other thoughts please.
An earthworm isn't an insect but then neither is a scorpion which I have for another of my answers.....can only assume they come into the category of "associates" as per the title at the top of the page..Thanks for the offer of help but still need 6, few too many to ask for at this late stage, for me anyway..I don't suppose you're doing the Apple a Day quiz, I still need 2 on that one and its due in on Friday.

That's what I've assumed too. I'm a bit behind with quizzes because of the school holidays and am working through them in order of closing dates! Just finished and posted "Apple a Day" and have put slipped disc and stroke.
Thanks gen2 I knew the Oxford one was going to be something quite simple , really should have got that one. As for the other one, I shall go and make a cuppa and have a think, unfortunately at the moment all I keep seeing are the Two Ronnies (funniest sketch ever I think)!....c
field athletes one is probably "slipped disk"
Oh thanks Ternigapp, I shall relax and enjoy the tea now, not sure where I was going with gen2's clue . Thanks to you both...c
Hey gen2 I think I just got the joke!!! I am sooooo slow...c
