I'd really like a career as a carer, however everywhere I've applied for they've asked me if I have or ever have been clinically depressed, which I have and to make matters worse I tried to take my life once. This was 4 years ago now, and I'm totally fine now and all my friends think that I would be a great carer (I'm very friendly, patient and loving). Can anyone think of anywhere I could go near London or chelmsford where they might give me a chance

Have they actually turned you down BECAUSE of your depression issues or have you just not applied for jobs because of the question? It is a pretty standard question these days. Most jobs I have applied for (not in the caring sector) have had questions about both mental and physical health problems. I currently work for a council and there are questions on all the application forms about mental health issues, eating disorders etc.

I don't know what the law is re: caring, but most companies have to be very careful about using health issues as a reason not to hire people. My friend has epilepsy and she always has to go for a medical before a company accepts her. Have you been offered this option?

No i didn't apply for them because of that, i just figured that if it didn't matter to them then why would they ask? I've also had a eatting disorder, it wasn't dignosed though, and i'm eatting fine now. do you think i can get away with not telling them that?
shouldn't matter. i am a psych nurse and have been a service user myself in the past. it gives me personal as well as professional perspectives - don't be too sensitive about your history - but equally you do not have to reveal all to others either.
I have a friend who is a carer and got the job whilst on anti depressants. She's off them now but she didn't tell the employer about it.
Why not do some voluntary work in that field to begin with? It'll give you some great valuable experience and hopefully a referance too.
Don't let the application form put you off, still fill them in honestly and apply, the large section (usually where you put all about you) will allow you to tell the employer why you want the job and what makes you a great carer.
Also have a look at your local collges to see if you can do an evening course to improve your qualifications
