liege and traipse seem OK
I put liege and trample
trample
It could be traipse or trample :
traipse means to trudge which means a heavy or weary walk
trample means to tread roughly underfoot
Both definitions above in Chambers
dawndevil For the answer to be "tramped", the clue would have to read "Walked heavily"~ so that both verbs would be in the past tense.

thank you all
still undecided what to put for 2 down

I would favour trample. The two defintions of traipse and trample from Chambers are below and trample has a more direct closeness to the clue.

traipse or trapes
vi to trail; to trudge; to gad; to go in a slatternly way.

trample
vt to tread roughly under foot; to press down by treading; to treat with pride, to insult.
vi (usu with on or upon) to tread roughly or in contempt; to tread forcibly and rapidly.
