I heard somewhere that you shouldn't give your dog pork as it can make them ill. Is this true as my friend fed some to my dog yesterday and i'm rather concerned.

All dogs are Jewish.
How can you not know that!
I've heard it but don't think i'll kill em.
I think it stems from the fact that you don't get pork in dog foods.

Of course dogs can eat pork.

Dogs are carnivores, pork is meat.

Dogs must not eat chocolate though
I have always given my dogs leftover pork and the bones from pork chops and never had a problem!

The only things they cant have is chicken bones as they get lodged in the throat, and someone told me chocolate is very bad for them, but I still give my pooch the odd small peice of chocolate here and there...he loves it!
You don't get much pork in dog food because it is the only animal that people eat every bit of.
I think that the problem with chocolate is that in some dogs eating chocolate can be fatal, and you are not going to know if your dog is going to drop dead until you give it chocolate. catch22

We used to feed one of our dogs a Yorkie (chocolate bar not yappy dog) a week and he lived to an old age - that was about 20 years ago. Not sure if I would chance it know that I know the risks.

Thanks everyone - u have put my mind at rest.
Years ago we had a Lab that ate absolutely everything, she drank milk, ate pork, chocolate, raw bones, everything. She died at the age of 18 years, with only about 3 trips to the vet, for speying, and a couple of check-ups when she was very old. We must have been extremely lucky!
we have given previous dogs chocolate...milk, never plain, with no ill effects but wouldn't risk it now...the other big no no's are anything from grapes...so raisins, sultanas, grape juice fruit cake etc as it can cause kidney failure and xylitol which is an artificial sweetener most often used in sugar free chewing gum. Apparently quite a small amount of this can be fatal. Onions can make some dogs ill I believe too.
I believe the pork thing is from the days when pigs were often infested with tapeworms and dogs got fed raw bits with tragic results
Pork in small quantities is ok, but I would say a definite no no to pork chop bones.

Pigs ears and pork rinds, trotters and even pigs tails and snouts are sold as dog treats, with no ill effects.

An abbatoir near me brought out their own complete dog food a few years ago made from pork called MacMillans. They spent a fortune installing the production plant and did trials but when they went into production dogs were being sick on it and also some were getting cholesterol patches in their eyes. They ceased production and it was never heard of again.
Ethel:- Oh my god....never feeding my pooch even a tiny weeny bit of chocolate ever again, I just wont eat it in front of him so I dont feel bad!!!
Hi Lil

You can send me the chocolate that's not now going to your dog !

Be careful Jayne, you know what they say.
Moment on the lips, lifetime on the hips.
Asked my dad about feeding your dog bones. He's a retire police dog handler and said you shouldn't really feed your dog any bones except ones from the pet shop and he's be wary of them.

We've given our springer lamb bones in the past and he's demolished the lot....won't be doing that again.
