I didn't get around to doing the daily record crossword this week, but I have seen the answer to 2 of your questions listed.
Mettle = morale
impeded = detained

Katburd-You are correct with detained as it fits with the other clues.

69. One meaning of snub is to stop, therefore snubs, although I'm not sure how it fits in with Mary Decker-Slaney
i think snubs is right, because Mary Decker-Slaney was snubbed by the U.S. Track Federation for testing positive for a high level of testosterone (even though her name was cleared) and even though her name was cleared, the International Federation removes her name from all post-1996 records that she held.
