My remote keyfob is broken, and I am going to replace it with a new one from Ebay (Kempie, thanks for that link), but how will I get it to work on my car,I thought my car would have have some sort of built in unique code?

The fob and/or alarm/immobiliser need to be recoded/reset. This can be done at a dealership (probably expensive) but I'm sure that there is a cheaper option.

I can't vouch for the info in this link but it might be helpful

Usually the ones on ebay are just the casing for the fob. I also have a Rover, i had the same problem, here is how i fixed it.

1. Unlock the door with the key.
2. Remove battery from the fob.
3. Press buttons on the fob several time, without the battery in to remove any static.
4. Replace fob battery.
5. Press the "lock" button repeatedly until the car locks.

This sorted mine and hopefully will yours. If not you are looking at about 80-100 to replace and program a new fob.
Let me know how you get on.
