Take your pick, from my Geology 101 text: (Admittedly dated)

Varve, marl, lens, horizon, aquitard, dike, bar, lamination(or laminate), scale (or scaling). Depends on which type of rocks are involved.  During my field work for study in geology, these layers were typically called "boundary layers"...
