My brother has 2 daughters who seem to spend all day on the internet now that the school holidays are here.

He says he leaves work at 11am, and they're already on the PC, and comes back at 11pm and they are in the same position.

He'd like to know how he can go about setting up the internet to only be available to his 2 daughters from 3pm to 9:30pm so they do something else for the duration of the day.

Is there anything that an administrator can do to set this up as he's not interested in downloading 3rd party software.

Regards
Jeff.

On a similar theme the YHA wanted the TV to turn off at 11pm so they installed a timer switch which was encased in a wooden box with a lock to prevent tampering.

I assume you could install a timer using the same method.
Hi

If he's running vista he can set up access times for certain people they each need to have a profile.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista /features/parental-controls.aspx

and I've just found this too.

In response to the first poster - I don't think it advisable to shut down the PC everyday by simply doing the equivalent of disconnecting the electricity supply!
That may not be a good idea for the pc, but would be relatively harmless for the modem or router.

Thanks for the suggestions.

At the moment he is running Windows XP so I'll take a look at the 2nd link madsteve.

I don't think the timer switch is such a good idea. There's nothing stopping the 2 girls getting into that box if they are addicted to the internet. Also it seems a bit too much seeing as the PC has a timer feature built in.
Krystiman you are obviously not an electrician. You don't disconnect the electricity supply just the lead that goes from the TV, you dimwit.
Nobody legally works 12hrs per day. Shorten the work day and spend time with the kids.....taking them out somewhere.

There really is no need to be some rude. Turning off the electricity is at the plug is exactly the same as disconnecting the electricity supply.

Surely you understand that if you turn a pc off at the mains you lose work in progress and possibly corrupt files? Effectively causing a pc to crash.

To turn off a pc, you close all files and programs and go through the proper shut down procedure.

terambulan - loads of people work 12 hours a day. My brother has to do 4 hours of overtime everyday just to keep up with rising costs.

That or he can shorten his working day, spend time with the kids and not have enough to pay for the mortgage.
Back to the question - jeff08 I know you said you don't want to download software but I found Crawler Parental Control does the job well, and best of all it's free.
