Italian air raids

An elderly nieghbour told me that the Italian Air Force caaried out a bombing raid on Britain during the Second World War. Apparantly they took quite a mauling.

I am unable to find any info on this. My nieghbour thinks the raid was on one of the south coast ports.

Can anyone help with this please?

They were based in Belgium and mostly attacked East Coast targets. Their aircraft were pretty obsolete by WWII standards though this wasn't uncommon. (Britain, France, Germany and America all operated similarly outclassed aircraft at the start of the war.) They were mainly restricted to night bombing but unfortunately for them were trained principally as day bombers! They were withdrawn back to Italy at the start of 1941.

The raid your neighbour is remembering took place over Harwich.

My husband is a WW2 anorak & agrees with all of previous answer, he believes Great Yarmouth was also hit. The Italians were woefully inaccurate.
