yes. everything on earth has its purpose.
This is the worst topic ever, BT, because like you, I loathe wasps. we have giant ones nesting near us - not hornets, just huge, revolting wasps.
The thing is though, they're the scavengers of the insect world. They eat up fallen fruit, and are also food themselves - for some birds and spiders.
Wasps serve as a link in the food chain. They are specifically very good at eating larvae of other destructive bugs. Web worms would run rampant if we didn't have wasps to eat them.

You could equally ask 'what is the point of butterflies'?
yes they're there to spoil your picnic
