I have been having some problems with my roof and I think there may be a posible leak in to the the chimney stack.

We have had a few quotes for the job but not one of the roofers have been up onto the roof to inspect it...How can they see what the problem is just by looking from accross the road?

Is it too much to excpect them to inspect the problem properly before quoting?

You need to be sure that they are giving you a written quote not a verbal estimate. Are they using the 'naked eye' or binoculars etc. Are you new to homeownership? Now I know what to look for, having bought some dodgy ( on purpose ) properties in the past , it might be obvious to the qualified eye what the issue is, but beware once they get on the roof the water ingress may have caused more damage than may first be apparent.
No it isn't, and it doesn't bode well. Have any of them been into the loftspace to view from below? - or was that too much trouble as well.

Thanks. BM I have looked and there is no damp anywhere except downstairs on the lounge chimney breast. When they have asked about further damp and received this answer none have inspected further. Needless to say the last chap will not be getting any work from me.

Thanks. Sense$4ll I was given a written quote but I don't see how he can give me a quote if he doesn't (and he can't really) know what the problem is just by from looking at street level!
an experienced roofer does not need to go up on the roof to see what needs doing, you can tell most problems from just looking at the roof,(if the slates are slipping, cracked, missing, flashings not in place etc, so don't think that they have to go up and examine the whole roof, try to get hold of a roofer that has worked for neighbours or relatives, word of mouth is the only way to get builders, good luck, Ray
