I have just put in a self certificate form at work due to a bout of Gastrorentiritis. I assumed that the certificate would last for a week (next Tuesday). But I have been informed that bit runs out Friday. But if I am still ill by then, can I put in another self certificate? Do I need to ring in on the Friday if I am still ill? I know the only reason there is pressure for me to go back on the Friday is that I know many people have booked it off to go to a party, so as you can imagine I am really annoyed that there is so much pressure for me to return to work if I am still ill. Does anyone know a solution to my problem?

Self-certification at work normally allows you to literally self-certificate yourself as having been ill for a certain period of time without a Doctor confirming it. After that you need a certification from your Doctor. If you went off ill on Friday last (i.e. were off ill at some point on Friday 27 June) and were still off with the same illness on Friday coming (i.e. 4th July) then they can ask for a doctor's note. If you are still ill, you certainly should not return to work. If there's a charge for a Doctor to give a hindsight note because you haven't been to see one while you were ill, investigate whether your employer will pay. Do this via your Trade Union if you are a member, which I hope you are :-)
I'm a bit puzzled. You went sick with gastroenteritis on Tuesday and have booked a week off sick already? Isn't that a bit odd? Gastroenteritis should only last a couple of days with maybe a day or so afterwards to recover. If youre already thinking of having a week or more off then I'm not surprised your employer wants you to get along to a doctor (or a hospital) as it must be very serious.

You need to read your contract of employment and/or office procedures to find out how long you can self certificate yourself for. Normally you wouldnt be booking this in advance.
I think you will find it ends on Sunday, I understood you self-certify for 5 days which includes weekends and then you must obtain a doctors cert for the 6th day onwards.

Thats what I thought as well. I have an appointment with the doctor on the Monday to say I am fit enough to return to work. More as a precaution as I work in a kitchen so I am obviously cautious that I dont pass on my condition to workers and cutomers alike.
You can self-certify for seven days so if you are unfit for work on a Monday, it runs out on the following Sunday. An employer can ask for a medical certificate ONLY after you have been sick for seven days.
i also had gastroenteritis earlier in the year and took two weeks off work to recover - was very sore inside and it took ages for my bowels to sort themselves out. i always attend my drs if i am sick and have time off work - i like my employer to know i am not skiving and am actually sick. if you are still unwell physically or just need a few more days to recuperate and get back to firing on all cylinders - see your gp. they can also sign you off for this. ****** your employer and the others who are partying - look after yourself first. get well soon...
