The sax for the 'Transformer' sessions was played by Ronnie Ross, a jazz musician known by David Bowie (who, together with Mick Ronson, produced the album) from his younger days.

Apparently, when Bowie was aged 12, he once asked Ross to teach him how to play saxophone who obliged. Thus it was Bowie who ensured he (Ross) was booked for the sessions to play baritone sax.

Additional trivia fact - Herbie Flowers, who arranged and played the classic bass-line on 'Walk on the Wild Side', also wrote the classic (not!) 'Grandad' sung by Clive Dunn.

Mind you, the only reason anyone remembers Herbie played bass on WOTWS is that he did "Grandad" as well, so it was worth it in the end! (And besides, "Grandad" isn't *that* bad!)
