It is illegal to 'undertake' unless:

1) the traffic in the right lane is waiting to turn right.

2) You are in a slow moving queue of traffic where one lane is running faster than the other.

3) you are in a one way street

4) you have been told to do so by a policeman/traffic warden.

I think thats the lot.

Yep, it's illegal to undertake. I was stopped once by a patrol police car on a motorway, lucky he listened to my reasons and left me off the hook.

It is illegal as stated above. That just makes it all the more annoying when people insist on staying in the middle lane of a motorway, which is also illegal.

Its illegal, but I think it shouldn't be on motorways. Our motorways are so crowded that to kepp pulling into the left lane and then out to overtake each slow moving lorry means weaving back and forward and it can be hard to get up to a safe speed to pull out into the middle lane, hence the decision to remain in the middle lane. It might irritate Alfas but it makes sense and I think its safer too as it seems the greatest danger is when changing lanes.

Thus I think we should legalise passing in any lane on Motorways, like they do in the US, with the convention to stay on the left except when passing.

But

Just to get it clear, undertaking is an overtaking move on the other side to usual. Therefore you have to move out, pass and move back in. Passing a car in a different lane isn't undertaking, and I've read letters in motoring magazines from people who slow down in dual crriaheways to make sure they don't go faster than the car on their right as they don't understand this point.

Agree with David H.........passing on the left isn`t illegal if you`re not changing lanes.

Overtaking on the left then returning to the lane in front in front of the vehicle you`ve just passed is what I recognise to be undertaking and that is illegal, dangerous practice, and highly irritating.

Even more dangerous are those drivers who don`t know where their mirrors or indicators are or what their use is.

Hey!.......Let`s be careful out there!

Note to Pinotage: Motorways are more crowded than they need to be because the inside lane is usually empty because people insist on driving in the middle lane! (and no I do not drive an Alfa)

are the lanes on a motorway not as such

1 far left slow lane

2 middle  fast lane

3far right  over takeing lane
