How do I install Linux on a spare hard drive?

I have Linux on a new laptop and I like it. I have a spare empty hard drive on my desktop so can I install Linux into this drive ad how do I do it. I have looked round the Linux forums without success and read current comments on this site but am still not quite sure. Help please.

What distribution do you want to use? I'd recommend Ubuntu.

Download the 8.04 .iso file (32-bit desktop edition). This is the standard file that most download.

Once downloaded, you burn this .iso image file as a CD (using Nero or something if you're on Windows or something else on GNU/Linux).

This CD is the live CD for Ubuntu, which can install itself too. To install, connect your extra drive to your computer, put the CD in and restart. You may need to check your BIOS (press F2 or DEL at bootup or something), and make sure it's set to boot from CD first.

Hopefully the CD will be booted into, starting the Ubuntu installer. It should also recognise your extra drive. Tell the installer to install on the external drive, and that should be it.
