Im making Cosmopolitans on saturday night but have just run out of Cointreau. Can't afford another 20 bottle!! and have just been advised by the guy in the offy that Triple-Sec would work just aswell.

Has anyone used this triple-sec? is it similar to Cointreau? Would my cosmopolitans still taste fabulous with it?!!!

Thanks x

Well it does have an orangey flavour. Nowhere near as strong as Cointreau (between 18-20%) I know De Kuypers make it and its a kind of orange liqueur.
This is a copy of a post I did somewhere else. And the answer to your question is yes. The question was, did anyone know a recipe for cosmopolitans?

Yes. The simple, classic version really does work best.

2 Vodka
2 Triple Sec
1 Cranberry Juice
1 Lime Juice

Then flame a piece of orange peel over the surface. This is almost like the "secret ingredient".

Use a vodka like Absolut or Finlandia. Keep it in the freezer. When you use it, it has a wonderful viscous consistency, and it's cold.

Always have a bottle of good quality Triple Sec in the house. It is essential for so many great cocktails,

Use freshly squeezed lime juice, not lime cordial, which is sometimes suggested. Lime cordial doesn't work.

How to flame orange peel ...

Take an orange (obviously). Make sure it's fresh and firm. Cut an oval of peel, maybe one inch by two inches. Hold it across its width, a few inches above your glass, skin side facing down.

Hold a lit match between the glass and the orange peel. Now squeeze the peel sharply. The peel should snap, squirting orange oil through the flame and onto the surface of the drink. This leaves a film of orange oil on the surface of your Cosmopolitan. The perfect, delicious finishing touch.

It's called "flaming" because it produces a very jolly pyrotechnic flare. Great for dinner parties. Makes you look a bit flash. Possibly worth practising first. You dont look quite so flash if you burn your fingers and knock over the cocktail glass.
