Primark have stopped trading with several clothing manufacturers in southers India because they reputedly use child labour.
my question is this. has the Fair Trade policy helped or hindered the children of India and their familys ?
last week they were in employment. earning precious cash for a days work. it may have been a long day with little return, but it was cash to help a family with food and other essentials.
today they are out of work and out of cash.
my opinion is this. its better to earn an income with wages that match your own economy than to live in the gutter and have nothing in your life.
i DONT agree with slave labour, but i do think fair trade is doing some familys more harm than good.

Much as I deplore child labour, surely this factory work is better than child prostitution, which I believe is their other choice. Of course we would all rather see them going to school and enjoying thier childhoods, but what chance of that? Yes I agree with Blackthunder.
The essential problem is that we in the West have, and they don't. The solution is obvious, I have stated it on here before, we in the West need to give freely to these unfortunates. 5p on Income Tax, give it to these impoverished countries, and take it from there. This approach has never been tried. It would work.
People buy stuff in Primark ..wear it
twice and dump it ..you only get what
you pay for ..if it's cheap kit it's kiddie
slave labour ..also the watches you
buy when on holiday ..Rolex for 10 ...
the kids go blind ...the people who
exploit them are us by buying the stuff ..
think about it next time you buy ..
"In a perfect world....." and we are not.
