If she doesn't want a gate up, you can't put a gate up - I expect at least a part of it would be attached to their property.

It depends on whether you own the piece of land you want to put the gate onto. As a rule a gate does not block access.
Check to see if you own the land, and also try looking at this website, which gives information regarding boundary dispute. www.boundary-problems.co.uk
is it an alley or a driveway i cant help here without more info
an alley way cannot be blocked as in shared access but a driveway can be blocked under certain circumstances but i dont no whats being blocked sorry
If it's shared access then probably one of you owns it and the other has a right of way. You can't legally block a right of way with a gate or anything else.
