I work in a small office for a small company, there is 14 of us including the manager and the supervisor in the office.

Today one of my collagues was on the net when the supervisor came in the office and caught him, at which point he slapped him round the head, hard enough to make his ear ring.

What would you do in thes situation and what would you advise my collague to do?.

unprofessional answer, stand up and smack him back..

Professional answer, report to the main boss for unprofessional and violent conduct.

Thats assult.
Even if this person was on the net for something else other than work it is still assult.
Call the police.
The problem is how many people saw it happen and how many will stand as witnesses?
That's called 'Gross misconduct' and is a serious offence.

This person is a bully and should be reported to their line manager
If I did that in my office I would be booted out! It's gross misconduct and he simply cannot go around hitting colleagues.
As above, it is gross misconduct and a sacking offence. It warrants instant dismissal and does not require the employer to give the usual warnings etc.
Report him immediately to the overall boss and go higher and higher until you get action.
This kind of behaviour is disgraceful.
If the employer will not take action, it is also assault and can/should be reported to the police.
Like Chuck, there are 2 ways to react. THe right way and the wrong way.

Personally I would have put his head though the fire door, but thebest thing to do is file a formal complaint against him, start proceedings of a disciplinary and do him for assault.

No one has the right to hit anyone.
...if you give me his name, address and 10k, i'll do his knee caps with my sawn off.
If it was the other way around, your colleague would undoubtedly be sacked. It is assault, pure and simple and must have been pretty hard to make their ears ring. If it goes unreported, they will think that they can get away with it. Disgraceful behaviour from a supervisor! If the manager was in the room, action should've been taken immediately.
Spaced I may have a job for u...... :-)
Just kidding. Before some one jumps down my throat.
Jumps down tigerlily's throat, realises it's a little dark and wet, and climbs back out

Sorry Lil ;)
lol @~spaced~
Oh thats what that was. You've had me coughing my lungs up Lee.:-)
Sorry Big I'm not trying to make light of your thread.
All of the above (apart from my second post should be considered.
I hope this bloke gets whats coming to him. That is nothing more than bullying. Shame on him that he has to resort to school yard tactics.
It's gross misconduct, as said, and you were witness to it. Report to his manager immediately. The guy should be sacked on the spot! Unbelievable
Where does he think he is, Guantanamo bay? Or some Dickensian society? Brute.
