one of the hallmarks of old time society was the closer communities, which made it a lot harder for people to burgle each other (for instance) when everyone knew where everyone else was. They didn't have TV or cars in those days so they didn't go anywhere much and didn't get advanced criminal ideas from Hollywood.

Would you give up your car and your telly to return to those days? For that matter, would you even get on with your neighbours?
