To protect plants in tubs I use those copper strips you can buy from any garden centre.
For garden plants I use the bog standard slug pellets.
I read somewhere that the horrid critters won't cross sand so you could try that.
You could try making slug traps - sink a container into the ground so the top is level with the soil. Half fill the container with beer and hopefully they'll fall in and drown.
Someone suggested used coffee grounds on here a few weeks ago, apparently snails hate it. If you live near Starbucks they give it away for free. I use Growing Success Slug Stop, it's granules you circle the stem of the plant with. It cost 5 for 3.5 litres.Other than that if you have the stomach for it go out with a torch late in the evening when they come out and collect the horrible nasties in a bucket, what you do with them after that I leave to you.
PUT SALT ON THEM!! They will die for certain, its a terrible death for them, but they are wellll annoying, my dad does that! :L:L

Happy Killing! :):) xx
have used biological control from these people; one application lasted all summer and very effective.

Plant African marigolds amongst your beans. The slugs and snails love them and will leave your beans alone - and keep the aphids away.
we are trying nematodes for the first ime this year as alan suggests. Will let you know!
Get out there at night with a torch and a container and collect them up, especially after or during rain. Remove them quite a way from home or they will return. Foxes love to eat them. Last year I went out most nights and I got rid of every single one. Got a few back this year but you just have to persevere.
don't put salt on slugs if they are on the lawn, leaves a horrible black mark for ages. Also don't watch them if you put salt on them, the hardest heart would soften if you see the agonising death they die.
This year I put slug pellets round my hostas before they came up out of the ground, and so far not a single hole. Usually I forget until they have come up, too late!!
