When you're writing a letter in Word for Windows, and start writing the date, it invariably "fills" it in for you using its own preferred format. HOW does one stop the confounded thing from "helping" in this way?

Tahnks for the advice Buenchico . . .however I cannot find the word 'Dates' .with or without a tick?????
Hmm

Perhaps the method varies with different versions of Word? I'm using Word 2002. Here's a screen shot of what I see when I click the 'Smart Tags' tab:

You can clearly see the 'Dates' line (which I've removed the tick from). Even if your screen is slightly different, the setting should be in there somewhere.

Thanks Buenchico! Sadly, like sir.prize, I have an older version of Word for Windows, and cannot find a tick-box for dates anywhere... :-S
Once more Buencho. . . thanks. I am using Microsoft Office Word 2003 - maybe it is slightly different to others. but definitely no 'Dates' line on mine.
In Word, choose INSERT then Date & Time, then uncheck the box that says 'update automatically'. (bottom right hand side)
Thanks weeal. Done exactly that. Now when I type

June 3, 2008 it automatically adds

2008-6-3

There are many options, such as 03 June 2008 and 3 June 2008, but NOT June 3, 2008

I have unchecked the 'update automatically' box but nothing has changed. I appear to be having the same problem as aquilotta. Grrrrrrrrr
