Hi. Have a flat with no TV aerial, and have no need for TV, but want to watch DVDs. If we buy an ordinary DVD player, and a flatscreen monitor, will we be able to watch the films? Or would it require an interface such as a computer or a "real" tv for it to process the DVD ? (in other words, would buying a monitor + DVD player just be a waste of money 'cos they won't do what we want?) Advice gratefully received!

Most monitors have connections for computers - eg SVGA or DVI cable, whereas most DVD players have a Scart connection.

This cable seems to do the job for you and is suitable for lcd monitors (not old type monitors)

Not sure what the quality will be like though.

Gulp. Thank you!
If you buy a dvd player with hdmi out and a monitor with hdmi in then it should work with just the hdmi lead.

You may need also need amplified speakers to get the sound to work too.

Thank you both. Looking at your answers, and comparing prices of comparably-sized LCD monitors/LCD TVs it seems as though it might simply make sense to go straight for a small LCD TV, even if I currently have no intention of using it as a TV...
Bear in mind that if you buy a monitor and dvd player, then you will not need a tv licence.

If you buy a tv (even if you don't watch it), you will need a tv licence.
